How to Not Let A Recession Affect Your Personal Life

As a result of the current and hard economic times of today, many couples are suffering from stress over their finances, and specifically their unsecured credit card debts. This debt stress is affecting their relationships too and in a negative way.  It’s never easy to cope with financial hardship and debt, but it’s important not to let debt stress or budget stress take over your life.

During a time of crisis, it’s important to work with your significant other to resolve your budget crises and debt situation and avoid unnecessary additional stress.  One option is to reach out to a professional who specializes in debt help so as to not to let financial strain negatively impact your relationship.  Couples have ended up in divorce from money issues and debt that was not handled together or credit card debts not handled properly.  However, if aside from your financial troubles you have an otherwise healthy relationship, there are ways to avoid letting the current economic climate negatively affect your relationship.   If you want to preserve your relationship, another option is to re-examine your budget and look at how you spend your money together.  Couples can work together to retool their budget and get their finances under control.  Getting your budget and debt under control will make you feel more empowered and together you may experience a greater sense of stability.  The goal is to reduce your debt which will ultimately lead you to less debt related stress. Additionally, by reducing or eliminating your debt and lessening the anxiety and worry that comes with overspending and debt, your relationship will prosper.

One important avenue to avoid when debt has taken over your lives is to not blame each other. The blame game is not the solution to debt and debt related stress in a relationship.  Blaming is an easy thing to do when you’re stressed from debt since perhaps you feel the other spouse was the one that caused the financial strain in the relationship.  Blaming is not productive, working together to find a solution to your debt and budget matters is the answer. Seek out professional debt help to work through debt and financial crises. There are trustworthy debt related solutions out there that will not put you further behind but will guide you to debt resolution and budget counseling to get your financial situation back on track.

There are several things you can do protect your relationship during a financially tumultuous times. Talking things through calmly and together often puts couples on the track to debt resolution while preserving the relationship.  For example, say you and your significant other have a luxury vehicle that you can no longer afford making payments on and this is due to job loss or reduction in working hours. Each month your are trying to avoid missing a payment on that debt and that is putting you farther and farther behind in your other bill payments, and affecting your ability to pay your other debts.  One reaction to this dilemma is to get angry and frustrated with the debt and financial crisis.  You may throw a fit, and blame each other for this car you can no longer afford anymore and the effect it’s having on your finances.  This scenario is sure to be very damaging to your relationship.  However, if you and your significant other can make a mature decision regarding the best way to deal with the debt related to the vehicle or any other payment you are struggling with, you will not only protect your relationship, but you will also likely come to debt help solution more quickly.  Know that there are good debt solutions with options and when both people agree to maturely discuss the situation, it’s easy to reach an solution that works for your financial circumstances and does not compromise your relationship.

In reality, it’s not finances that ruin a relationship, but rather how we deal with the debt stress and those financial troubles related to debt.  Stress, anxiety and depression all come into our lives for many reasons and can ruin our relationships. Resentment and other negative emotions that are out of control during financial crises can make us turn on each other.  No one likes to experience financial strain, especially when the loss of a job or injury or illness beyond our control has caused that loss of income.  Taking control of your finances and your debt situation will make the difference in not sacrificing your relationship over debt and the loss of your current lifestyle when money gets tight.  As an adult you are capable of working through these obstacles with your loved one and not letting them affect your life or ruin your relationships with the people you love.

There is no magic spell to dealing with debt stress, budget stress, and other financial woes.   The best way to deal with financial stress is to approach the situation in way that unites you with your significant other instead of pulling you apart.   Find creative solutions.  Lower the heat and cuddle up together under a warm blanket.  Turn off cable tv and play games together or start reading good books that you can discuss later.  Cancel your gym membership and go on walks, runs, or hikes together.  Make each other lunch to bring to work and do not snowball spend on unnecessary items during the day.  Don’t look at it as your giving things up, see the debt and related financial issues as a way to get closer to each other and support each other during financial stress.  It may not be easy, but by learning to adjust your budget and agreeing to live within a certain financial parameter, not only will you reduce the amount of financial stress you are experiencing, but your relationship will only get stronger!
